John Louis Kurtz

WATCHUNG, NJ (FORMERLY OF KINGWOOD TOWNSHIP, NJ) - John Louis Kurtz, 90, of Watchung, NJ, formerly of Kingwood Township, NJ, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at his home.

Born July 15, 1927 in Northampton, PA, John grew up in the Yorkville section of New York City. He moved to Kingwood Township in 1942 and lived there most of his life until moving to New Port Richey, FL. He lived in Florida until he moved to Watchung, NJ in 2011. John was the owner of Kurtz Construction in Frenchtown, NJ from 1960 until his retirement in 1986, where he worked alongside is brother, Joseph. John was also a farmer and purchased the farm his wife's family had owned in Kingwood Township, NJ. He loved flying planes and had his pilot license. John enjoyed working with his hands and always volunteered his time to help people, however he could. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. John was deeply passionate about his causes and interests including faith, astrophysics, the Civil War, and the plight of the Native Americans.

Son of the late Francis and Mary (Jurasits) Kurtz, John is survived by his three sons John Kurtz, Jr., Thomas Kurtz, and Stephen Kurtz, his four daughters Catherine Shutte, Mary Therese Kurtz, Michelle Parides, and Donna Salzberg, his sister Johanna Kerman of Florida, 34 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene S. (Stellmah) Kurtz in 1989, his two brothers Frank Kurtz and Joseph Kurtz, and his step-father John Schmidt.

Funeral services will begin on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Township, NJ, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at the Our Lady of Victories R.C. Church, Route 519, Baptistown, NJ. Interment will follow at the St. Magdalen Cemetery in Flemington, NJ. Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
