Samuel L.M. Cole, Sr.

GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, NJ - Samuel L.M. Cole, aged 99, of Greenwich Township NJ, formerly of Scotch Plains and Sergeantsville NJ, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the K.A. Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon Township NJ. Born June 6, 1918 in Elizabeth NJ, he was a son of the late Walter H. and Emilie vomLehn Cole.

Mr. Cole was an alumnus of the Pingry School, Harvard College and Harvard Graduate School of Engineering. He served in the US Navy during World War II, and as LT Commander he captained the USS ALDEBARAN. His ship was present in Tokyo Bay for the Japanese signing of the surrender document held on the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. He was employed by the Elizabeth manufacturing firms Lidgerwood, Moore Brothers and Elizabeth Irons Works before being employed for thirty years by and retired from Pfaff and Kendall Corporation, an aluminum fabricator, in Newark NJ. As a long-time member of the American Welding Society, he was instrumental in developing the Aluminum Structural Welding Code.

Mr. Cole was a long-time member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Mountainside NJ. He was a member of the Greenwich Township Planning Board from 1991 to 1997.

His first wife, Eleanore Bell Cole, died in 1982; his second wife, Ellen Tall Cole, died in 1996. He is survived by sons Samuel L.M. Cole Jr. and wife Suzanne of Loveland CO and John A. Cole and wife Jacqui of Hollister CA, a stepdaughter, Kendel Culton and husband William of Pittstown NJ and grandsons Samuel L.M. Cole III and Philip Cole; and two great granddaughters.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Milford, NJ.
