Shirley Mitchell

Shirley A. Mitchell, 91, of Holland Township, NJ, formerly of Little York, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at Saucon Valley Manor in Hellertown, PA.

Shirley was born June 18, 1930 in Shanghai, China, while her family were missionaries there. She then lived in Canada with her family, later moving to East Orange, NJ and High Bridge, NJ, with her first husband Bill who predeceased her. Later, Shirley married Mark G. Mitchell, Sr. and they bought a house in Little York, NJ, where they lived for many years. They moved to Holland Township this past year. She attended Raritan Valley Community College and graduated from Northampton County Area Community College in 1983. Later in life, Shirley became an ordained Methodist minister, serving multiple churches in Warren and Hunterdon Counties. She was a member of the Frenchtown United Methodist Church in Frenchtown, NJ. Shirley was an avid animal lover. She enjoyed going to yard sales and flea markets. Most of all, Shirley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who touched many families through her ministry and friendships.

Daughter of the late Percy and Elizabeth (Wallace) Rayment, Shirley is survived by her beloved husband Mark G. Mitchell, Sr., her step-son Neal A. Mitchell of Holland Township, NJ, her step-daughter Holly A. Hallinger and her husband Mark of Holland Township, NJ, her nephew John Rayment and his wife Kristy and their children Nicholas, Jared and Zachary, her five grandchildren Kevin, Mark, Ashley, Jessica, and Kyle, and her former daughter-in-law Barbara Cross of Texas. She is also survived by her great-nephews Andrew and Michael Rayment and great-niece Samantha Smith and her son Finn Smith. Shirley was predeceased by her first husband William VanNest, her son Roger VanNest, her step-son Mark G. Mitchell, Jr., her brother Edward “Ted” Rayment, and her nephews Mark and Douglas Rayment.

The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Saturday, April 23, 2022 from 10 AM - 12 PM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Township, NJ, followed by a funeral service at 12 PM with Pastor Peter Mantell officiating. Interment will follow at the Frenchtown Cemetery in Frenchtown, NJ.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Frenchtown United Methodist Church, 16 3rd Street, Frenchtown, NJ 08825.
