George E. Sampson

George E. Sampson, 84, of Holland Township, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ.

Born September 17, 1935 in New York City, George lived on the Lower East Side. At the age of fourteen, his family moved to Bradley Gardens, NJ, where he lived for many years, before moving to Holland Township in 1972. For decades, George was a self-employed carpenter and the owner of Sampson Construction. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and was a member of the American Legion Motorcycle Riders of Frenchtown and Riegelsville. George loved "anything with a motor", especially motorcycles and snowmobiles. One of his favorite pastimes was going on Poker Runs with his sons. He loved snowmobiling in Canada and New York, and traveling. His most memorable trip on a bike was to Sturgis, SD. George was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed many trips to Alaska and out west and recently fulfilled a lifelong dream to visit his father’s homeland of Malta. He always had a beloved dog at his side. Most of all, George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Blower) Sampson, George is survived by his beloved wife of fifty two years, Joan R. Sampson, his two sons Michael Sampson and his wife Marion and Joseph "Butch" Sampson and his wife Melissa, his daughter Lynn Farley and her husband Glenn Panick, his five grandchildren Megan, Melanie, Eric, Zachery, and Gregory. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his daughter Leslie Dotson in 2012, his two brothers John Sampson and Paul Sampson, and his two sisters Betty Beyer and Carol Salerno.

The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 2-4 PM at the Johnson-Walton Funeral Home, 24 Church Road, Holland Township, NJ. Entombment will be private at the St. Bernard Mausoleum in Bridgewater Township, NJ.

We are so very saddened to hear of George's passing. Our hearts go out to Joan and the entire family. We truly enjoyed having George as our neighbor and talking with him when we would come down to deliver eggs. Our boys are going to miss him. They just told me of the times that they would see George working outside on something and they would go over to say hello. George never seemed to mind that they were interupting him. In fact, he would tell them to wait while he went inside to grab them each a piece of candy before he sent them on their way. We are so grateful to have been able to know George and even though it was only for a short while he left a lasting impression on our hearts and especially the hearts of my children.
